NEWCASTLE water police expect to complete this week an investigation of the firing of a flare that hit a 10-year-old girl in a New Year's Eve fireworks show at The Foreshore.

Brianan Jeffery, of New Lambton, was burnt on her right hand after being hit by a ship distress flare, which was alleged to have been fired from a vessel.

Senior Constable Gavin Herbert, of Newcastle water police, said yesterday officers had identified the flare's origin.
